Hello everyone! How are you all? I am fine and I hope that you all are fine too.
Ok, so today, we will discuss another complication which is caused by a superfamous micro-miny personality that lives in our environment and prefers darkness. Well, there is no need to extend the mystery more. By reading the title, you must have understood today's blog revolves around Malaria. So, without wasting a second, let us begin!!!!
GENERAL INTRODUCTION
Ok, so WHAT causes Malaria? The root cause of Malaria is a parasite. There is a complete cycle in which the parasite is transferred in mosquitoes, and then to humans which will be discussed later.
CAUSES
There is only one cause of Malaria, a parasite. The following table will explain. Note that Malaria is caused by a parasite, known as Plasmodium, which is spread through mosquitoes. Fancy the mosquitoes not being affected by the "Plasmodium" and the humans being severely affected. Well, the figure can explain.
- Fever and flu-like illness
- Shaking chills
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Tiredness
- Nausea,
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Anemia
- Jaundice
TYPES OF MALARIA
Four different species of Plasmodium parasites cause most malaria in humans:
Plasmodium vivax - less severe
Plasmodium falciparum - most deadly
Plasmodium ovale - less dangerous
Plasmodium malariae - mildest and most persistent
DIAGNOSIS
Malaria parasites can be identified by examining under the microscope a drop of the patient’s blood, spread out as a “blood smear” on a microscope slide. Before the examination, the specimen is stained (most often with the Giemsa stain) to give the parasites a distinctive appearance. This technique remains the gold standard for laboratory confirmation of malaria. However, it depends on the quality of the reagents, the microscope, and the experience of the laboratorian.
TREATMENT
Malaria can only be treated using drugs. It depends on which type of malaria you are affected with. Your doctor will prescribe what medicine you need. In general, it takes about two weeks of treatment to be cured of malaria. However, in some individuals, relapses are possible. The period from initial parasite infection to the appearance of symptoms varies according to the particular species of Plasmodium that infects an individual.
CAN MALARIA CAUSE DEATHS?
Yes! Malaria can cause deaths. But, again it depends on which type of malaria you are affected with. The most deadly type of Malaria is caused by Plasmodium falciparum, which causes Cerebral malaria. Cerebral Malaria is a neurological disorder that is caused by Plasmodium falciparum. I will write a blog on that soon. So, returning to where we were, yes! Malaria can cause deaths.
COMPLICATIONS PRECEDING MALARIA
Malaria can cause several life-threatening complications. The following may occur:
- swelling of the blood vessels of the brain, or cerebral malaria
- an accumulation of fluid in the lungs that causes breathing problems, or pulmonary edema
- organ failure of the kidneys, liver, or spleen
- Anemia due to the destruction of red blood cells
- low blood sugar
- Brain hemorrhage
PREVALENCE
Malaria is prevalent globally. According to the report, 1.5 billion malaria cases and 7.6 million deaths have been averted since 2000. In 2019, the global tally of malaria cases was 229 million, an annual estimate that has remained virtually unchanged over the last 4 years. The disease claimed some 409 000 lives in 2019 compared to 411 000 in 2018. Children aged under 5 years are the most vulnerable group affected by malaria; in 2019, they accounted for 67% (274 000) of all malaria deaths worldwide.
In 2019, six African countries accounted for 50% of all malaria cases globally: Nigeria (23%), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (11%), the United Republic of Tanzania (5%), Niger (4%), Mozambique (4%) and Burkina Faso (4%).
PREVENTIONS:-
There is currently no vaccine for malaria, but there are some ways that may help in preventing malaria:-
Using mosquitoes net
Avoiding living in areas where there are mosquitoes.
Ensure to apply mosquito-killing cream.
Spray mosquito killers often.
Following these ways can help avoid malaria.
